Maui County is made up of three islands: Maui, Molokai and Lanai. Maui, the largest of the three islands, has been chosen the No. 1 island in the world for the last eight years by the readers of Condé Nast Traveler. Molokai, which many say is the most Hawaiian island in the chain, is the county’s second largest island, with the island of Lanai, an almost all privately owned island, rounding out Maui County. Together, these islands offer some of Hawaii’s most magnificent and diverse locations, scenery, terrain and weather. Within close proximity to each other (by either ferry or plane) and only five hours away from Los Angeles, Maui County has all the natural resources to provide the perfect backdrop for any production need.

The MAUI Film Office: Through the Office of the Mayor, Maui County is ready to offer directors, producers, studios, production companies, and filmmakers production support, state-of-the-art facilities, crew and talent. The film office has several thousand location files, many of which can be seen in the Maui locations guide as well as on our website. Should you need to find a location, the film office will be happy to either e-mail photos to you or provide you with hard color copies. The film office provides location scouting services by air, land and sea. The film office maintains a complete and up-to-date crew directory as well. The film office will also assist you in securing the most competitive prices for hotels, auto rentals and other necessary services.

Locations: Maui County’s three spectacular islands offer 42 miles of sandy beach, 200,000 acres of verdant pastures and ranches as well as redwood and eucalypyptus forests. If it’s the plains of Africa or lush jungles, or rainforests you need, Maui County fits the bill. Maui’s towns also take on an international flavor. Lahaina, an old whaling town, features plantation-style architecture, while the surf town of Paia has a Caribbean flair, and upcountry’s Makawao is an ode to America’s old western towns of the past. And, of course, the sleepy town of Hana, also known as “heavenly Hana,” captures old Hawaii at its best. Couple this with some of the world’s tallest seacliffs and waterfalls on Molokai, and it’s easy to see why Maui County can double for almost anywhere in the world. With Maui’s moonlike Haleakala Crater and Lanai’s Mars-like Garden of the Gods, Maui County can double for other worlds as well.

Crew: For your convenience, Maui maintains a comprehensive production guide. Updated on a bi-yearly basis, this “film bible” can be viewed via hard copy sent to you or on our website. Maui has the second largest crew base in Hawaii, with many specialists in each field. Services abound on Maui along with editing facilities and stock footage of all kinds.

Permitting: The Maui County Film Office provides permits for all three islands and helps to facilitate state and national permits.

Facilities: The Maui Arts & Cultural Center is a state-of-the-art venue featuring a 1,000-seat indoor theater as well as a smaller theater that also doubles as a sound stage. Maui is home to a wealth of high-end production companies housed at the Maui Research and Technology Park and the Maui High Performance Computing Center. Facilities include fiber optic connectivity to the U.S. mainland, Asia, and Europe via T1 and T3 lines. Complete videoconferencing facilities, film resolution, CGI rendering and access to one of the world’s largest supercomputers are also available.

The Maui County Film Office prides itself as a one-stop shop for filmmakers. Remember, whatever your needs, Maui County will make it happen.
